KOREY SPRENGEL
10th in Angler of the Year Standings
“Overall, it was a good season, I only had a few days I wish I had back”, said the 2020 NWT Angler of the Year. Korey Sprengel of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin has plenty of history on this body of water with two NWT victories already and looking for his third. When asked about his keys to victory he responded “I have to make sure not to swing too big on day 1. In a 3-day event like this, consistency is king.”
As far as the fishing goes, Sprengel enjoys this time of year. He noted he expects this to be a big fish event, but with this cooler weather the fish could be difficult. “Cool weather brings the North wind which can affect fishing. Forward facing sonar will play a huge role in this event, but if the wind starts blowing, trollers will be in play. I’ll be doing both.”
When asked what kind of advice he would give a new or younger angler that wants to compete at this level he responded, “The first advice that comes to mind would be to fish as a co-angler. There’s a lot of great anglers you can get paired with to learn something from. I also recommend picking one body of water on the schedule you might be familiar with and fish it. This is a great way to gauge your skills.”
ERIC MCQUIOD
5th in Angler of the Year Standings
Eric McQuoid, of Algoma, Wisconsin, is a local favorite that has been on tear of late on this body of water. “I have high expectations for this event, and I am excited to get it started. When asked how he would prepare for the championship versus a regular season event he responded, “I am going to try to prepare the same as I always do. One benefit of this body of water being so close to home is I can sneak out a couple days earlier than normal and check on some things.” McQuoid expects trolling and glide baits to play a big part in this tournament.
When asked what advice he would give to aspiring tournament anglers, his advice was simple, “Find what bait or technique gives you confidence and go with it.”
DYLAN NUSSBAUM
8th in Angler of the Year Standings
“I wouldn’t change much about how my year has gone—I had a great season,” Nussbaum said. When asked about his expectations for the fishing, he responded, “It will probably be a forward-facing sonar game for this one, which is what a lot of us have been doing anyway.”
As for his strategy, he explained, “I like to use it a lot (FFS) or not at all. There’s no pressure going into this event—you can make really big moves.”
Nussbaum also offered valuable advice for new and younger anglers: “Just fish the event. One thing to pay attention to is picking up on the little things the great anglers are doing on tour. Don’t copy them, but work it into your own game.”
He cited fellow angler Korey Sprengel as an example, noting how organized and well-prepared Sprengel is. Nussbaum emphasized that new anglers shouldn’t try to imitate others completely, but rather take bits and pieces from different anglers to develop their own unique style.
“Winning the championship would be awesome—especially on Green Bay,” said Nussbaum. “I want the win not only because it’s the championship, but because this is a tough body of water and it’d mean a lot. I’ve never been here this time of year, so I’m unsure if it’ll be a big event or a tougher fishery.”
