TAMPA BAY, FL (August 17, 2024)- Day One of the 2024 Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s Inshore Fishing Association presented by Progressive fishing tournament in Tampa Bay, FL is in the books. After all the catches have been tallied the leader is kayak angler Daniel Currey who has a combined total of 49” for his Redfish and Speckled Trout.
Daniel started off the morning catching his Speckled Trout early, but it was an afternoon tide change that allowed him to catch a big keeper Redfish that eventually put him into the lead. Fishing out of a kayak, he is targeting fish up shallow that are set up in the normal West Coast Florida summer patterns. Daniel kept things simple fishing soft plastic swimbait style lures to capitalize on his catch. His Redfish measured 26.25” and his Speckled Trout came in at 22.75”.
CHARLES STATHAM in Second with 41.75”
Another angler fishing in the Kayak Division, Charles Statham recorded a Day-1 catch total of 41.75” which included a 22.00” Redfish and he’s currently in second place going into the final day of the tournament.
Charles was one of the first anglers to start recording catches in the catch, photo, and release format tournament. He successfully targeted an early morning flurry of active Speckled Trout. Then as the day went on, he was able to milk the area he started in to find some active Redfish. Charles was also reported fishing a soft-plastic pattern and following bait up into shallower areas.
