Chris Berglund is in 2nd place, Jake Caughey is in 3rd place
Marinette, WI (Sept. 4, 2025) – Day one of the fifth and final stop of the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s National Walleye Tour, presented by Progressive, saw big waves—and even bigger bags of Green Bay walleye. None were bigger than the 43-01 bag brought to the scales by Tom Huynh of Wolverton, MN. He was followed by Chris Berglund of Grand Rapids, MN, with 39-07, and Jake Caughey of Wahpeton, MN, who weighed in 37-14.
“I didn’t see it coming,” said Huynh. “I’ll be honest—yesterday I didn’t pre-fish. It was a little windy, and I always say the day before the tournament is the worst day to break something, so I didn’t want to risk it. The day before that, we caught one fish all day long. Practice wasn’t that great.”
After some thought, Huynh added, “I don’t think I’ve caught a full tournament limit since I started coming here three or four years ago.” Even without a full limit, Huynh has consistently done well here thanks to the quality of fish. “If anyone asks me, I always tell them: if I get a limit, it’ll be a good one.”
He wasn’t lying.
“It’s been a long road getting here. We’ve had some ups and downs,” said Berglund. “We were sitting good at La Crosse and fell on day two. I thought I had a good bag in New York, and it fell down as well. This is a great start to the day, but the job’s not finished. I’m super excited to get after them again.”
He wrapped up his interview by emphasizing how great his co-anglers and the fisheries have been all year, and what a great time he’s had throughout the season.
“I caught a six-pounder on the first drift. Those really aren’t the ones you want out here if you’re going for the win, but with this cold front and tough bite, I threw it in the box,” said Caughey. “After that, they started biting pretty good. I caught a nine and a couple over eight. I couldn’t throw those ones back—it was almost a two-and-a-half-pound upgrade.”
Caughey came in at noon when the scales opened—three hours early. He joked that his only regret was that his parents were driving up to the weigh-in and probably wouldn’t get to see him weigh his fish due to his early arrival.
